Did you know the ATA Carnet is going digital? The big 2026 logistics update explained.

If your business regularly moves commercial samples, exhibition equipment, or professional gear across international borders, you are likely familiar with the ATA Carnet. For decades, this document has served as a temporary passport for goods, allowing businesses to avoid import duties and taxes. But did you know that the ATA Carnet is now going digital? The traditional process has always relied on a physical paper booklet, in which missing a customs stamp or losing a page often led to significant operational delays. This summer marks a substantial change for global logistics.

The e-ATA Carnet: June 2026 rollout

On 1 June 2026, the digital transition formally began. The UK, the EU, Switzerland, and Norway are among the first wave of countries to officially accept the digital alternative, known as the e-ATA Carnet.

Currently, the ATA Carnet system is used by around 80 countries worldwide. The rollout is happening in stages:

• The first wave: Around 30 countries – including the UK, the EU, Switzerland, and Norway – are part of the initial phase, actively accepting and processing digital carnets.
• The global timeline: The remaining countries using the system are scheduled to integrate gradually, with the final objective of achieving a fully digital global network after 2028.

What changes for you?

• You will still apply through the Chamber of Commerce as usual, but you can now keep the approved carnet in a smartphone app instead of a physical binder.
• Customs officers just scan a QR code, and the validation is processed digitally on the spot, reducing the risk of a missed stamp or a lost page.
• Since the global rollout is happening in stages, you will still need to carry a paper backup for now, depending on where you are travelling.
